Vitamin D is essential to the proper functioning of the body. It contributes to the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, helps maintain the strength of bones and muscles, and also plays an important role in the immune system.
Unlike most vitamins, vitamin D is mainly produced by the skin under the effect of the sun's UVB rays. Diet provides only small amounts, chiefly through oily fish, egg yolks and certain fortified foods.
A common deficiency, even in summer
In many European countries, a large part of the population has insufficient vitamin D levels, even during the summer months. While sun exposure is essential for its synthesis, it is not always enough to meet the body's needs.
A vitamin D insufficiency can go unnoticed. When more pronounced, it can be associated with persistent fatigue, muscle weakness, bone or muscle pain, and, over the long term, decreased bone density with an increased risk of fractures.
The goal is to correct any deficiency while avoiding excessive intake.
When should supplementation be considered?
Supplementation is not routine. It depends on risk factors, age, medical history and, in some situations, a blood test for 25-hydroxy-vitamin D.
